A farmer sorting freshly picked coffee cherries in Ethiopia

Our Planet

A light footprint from farm to cup.

Coffee is a crop before it is a drink, grown by people whose livelihoods depend on healthy land. Our environmental approach begins with respecting that, and continues by keeping everything we add between the tree and the cup as light as we reasonably can: the journey, the roast, the packaging and the service.

At origin

Buy carefully, pay fairly.

We buy Arabica from farms in Ethiopia and from a small number of other origins, and we buy it with care. Ethiopia is also among the closest coffee origins to the UAE, which keeps the journey from farm to roaster short.

Fair payment is the foundation of everything else on this page. A farmer who is paid properly can afford to look after the land, and a long relationship gives both sides a reason to.

  • Arabica from Ethiopia and select origins
  • Long relationships with farming communities
  • Fair payment for the coffee we buy
  • A short journey from farm to roaster
In the UAE

Roast to order, waste less.

We roast when an order is placed rather than for stock. Coffee reaches cafés, partners and customers at its freshest, and very little is discarded for being stale.

Roasting here also means green coffee makes one long journey and the finished product travels only within the country. From roaster to café, partner or doorstep, the chain stays short.

  • Roasted when ordered, not for stock
  • Fresh deliveries in place of stockpiles
  • One long journey, then local miles only
  • Roasted, served and delivered within the UAE

Packaging and cafés

Small habits, every day.

Retail bags are designed to keep coffee fresh without excess packaging, and wholesale coffee leaves the roastery in larger bags rather than retail packs.

In the cafés we favour reusable cups and plates for dine-in, buy locally where we can to keep deliveries short, and look for ways to keep spent grounds and food waste out of landfill. None of it is dramatic. It is the sum of sensible habits repeated across every café.

  • Packaging sized to the job
  • Reusable cups and plates for dine-in
  • Local suppliers where practical
  • Grounds and food waste kept out of landfill where we can

Targets

Where we are heading

  1. Now

    Keep the chain short

Careful sourcing and roasting in the UAE remain the core of how Boon works, however the business grows.

  2. Next

    Measure our footprint

Map where our energy, packaging and freight impacts actually fall, so that future decisions rest on evidence.

  3. Next

    Lighter packaging

Move retail and café packaging towards materials that can realistically be recycled or composted in the UAE.

  4. Longer term

    Cleaner energy

Adopt renewable energy for the roastery and cafés as the options become practical here.

  5. Always

    Pay the farmer fairly

Fair payment to the people who grow our coffee comes before everything else.
